Training to Tolerate the Torture...

I've been a bit sporadic with my blog posts for the past few weeks <sorry guys> because things have been hectic. And to be completely honest, when you have a blog about running and you can't run because you're injured it just simply sucks to talk write about it.

I'm still injured but I'm off my "woe is me" soapbox <kind of>. I spent the past week trying to refocus and adjust my approach to Chicago so that I can make it across the finish line...without hating running. I anticipate that I'm still going to have some hip and knee pain but I'm hoping to maintain a pace and approach that will keep the pain within a tolerable range...

I ran 3 miles on Monday and it was painful but moderately tolerable...

I've been alternating swimming and strength training this week and completed my physical therapy evaluation on Wednesday. Fortunately no one has told me not to run. Well no medical/health professional has told me that. A few friends and family members (both veteran and newbie runners) have recommended just focusing on swimming (and strength training) until next week so I've been following that advice...
Not only do I finally think it's good advice but also if it doesn't work I'm able to justifiably roll my eyes at them the next time they say "don't run yet".

In addition to dealing with the adjustment to my current training schedule, I decided (or rather my hip has decided for me) that I'm going to go back to my shorter run:walk intervals for the rest of my training and for the Chicago marathon. The event has two pace teams for my corral (Corral K) each doing run:walk intervals. I figure if I can keep up with them then I should be ok and if all else fails I asked my friend Sacha to come back for me after she finishes...

Today I was a little stir crazy so Kai and I decided to go for a fun brisk walk to my brother's house, which is about 5 miles away. One mile after we started Kai advised me that we have a different understanding of the words "fun" and "brisk". And about 3.5 miles into the walk it started to rain so I ended up calling my brother to come and get us...

I'm not sure if Kai was annoyed about getting wet or just glad the "torturous" walk was over...

After our rescue from the rain we hung out with my cutie pie nephew...

I hope you stayed dry today!

Do you like to follow a pacer for your races?

Have you ever been a pacer for a race?

Do you run in the rain or avoid it like the plague?

  1. I don't think I've actually run a race that has pacers...

I am mostly from the Pacific Northwest, I love running in the rain! :)

  2. I ran 7 yesterday morning in the pouring rain! Still better than the treadmill. I've also run races in the rain. Hey, that's what we do!

I'm running Chicago too. Fighting plantar fasciitis...
