ENDURANCE...

Every long run morning will have to start really early if I'm going to get my mileage goal completed. Today was no exception: I was up by 3am; out the door by 4am; & at the Boardwalk ready to run by 5am. This week I only did 1 mid-week run so I was eager to do a 13 mile long run...

Normally I get fixated on what the weather conditions are going to be during my run, but (even though I knew it was going to rain later in the day) the weather was pretty nice this morning. I also had great company which helped distract me from the miles...
Distracting conversation was great but did nothing to minimize the left knee pain that started around mile 6/7. Once I got to mile 10 I decided to stop...

Unfortunately I was not able to get the 13 miles completed, but I was proud of my pace for the 10 miles that I did. This is definitely a "low weekly mileage" week for me. My typical average weekly mileage has been in the low 20s. It should be closer to 30 (but definitely not beyond 35 miles ~ that's my RED ALERT: RISK FOR INJURY zone)...

Right as I was about to turn around and do a recovery walk back to my car I caught a glimpse of the sunrise...

And I spent a few moments enjoying the view...

Nothing is quite as peaceful as the sunrise in the morning. The clouds appeared to be expertly painted on the backdrop of the sky, and the combination of the sunrise and the sounds of the waves gently crashing on the shore was nature's beauty at it's best...

Crashing waves are best enjoyed when you're actually in the water, so that's what I did...

Eventually my need for food overthrew my need to enjoy the crashing waves, so my running friends and I went in search of a Jamaican breakfast. Prior to starting the food quest I spent some time posting my run to my Instagram page and came across this...
(for the record... 10 miles will always be a big deal to me)

How was your long run this weekend?

Do you have a weekly mileage goal for your marathon training?

Do you think your 10 mile runs are a big deal?

  1. Wow! I don't tell my friends about running 10 miles anymore, but if I got up at 3am to go running I'd tell the whole world. That's some dedication, but the Sun rising looks as if it was worth it, it looks absolutely beautiful there.

    1. lol thanks James :) The sunrise is definitely worth it. I try to avoid the combination of sun and humidity... the humidity alone is bad enough without adding the heat from the Summer sun ;)

  2. What is that calendar are you using to keep track of your runs?

    1. I track my runs through my Garmin app. If you switch to the "Modern View" (as opposed to the "classic view") and click on the calendar section you should be able to see it (if you have a Garmin that is) :)

  3. Sorry your knee gave you problems but nice job getting the 10 done! I usually run about 40-50 miles at the peak of my marathon training. Otherwise I keep it to about 20-30. Lately I have felt like 10 mile runs are a big deal because I haven't done anything that long since last fall!

    1. wow 40-50 miles! How many running days do you schedule per week? Thanks for the knee sympathy :) It's a chronic issue, I just have to learn how to manage it :)
