Competing Priorities

My training has been resuscitated! It was touch and go for a while. Things weren't looking good at all. Let's face it, I haven't done much anything since the Coral Springs Half Marathon. The truth is life has been...challenging, with lots of competing priorities, and I had no choice but to focus on something everything else except training...
One of the competing priorities happened to be my national certification as a trauma nurse (Yay!). But I've also had a few unwelcome distractions (I'm still dealing with those actually)...

This morning I finally went to the pool, after taking over a month off from swimming, and did a one mile swim...

The "blanks" are when I took rest breaks. The first few were to clear the fog from my goggles; then to clear the water from my goggles; then to check my Garmin to make sure it wasn't skipping laps (it was); and then to do one final check to see how much longer I had to go...

I actually did the breaststroke for the one mile swim, then I did a few laps of freestyle after because I'm working on improving my freestyle stoke efficiency...

When I do freestyle I feel like a "real swimmer" but breaststroke is my "least likely to drown in the open water" swimming stroke. So that's what I'm planning on doing for Swim Miami next week...
Swim Miami attracts some of the best swimmers locally, nationally and even a few international swimming superstars. When I think about my experience last year I'm not sure what possessed me to sign up again... except maybe to prove that the experience is more enjoyable when you don't have sunscreen in your eyes ;)

Anyway this year my sister-in-law is supposed to be doing it with me. I convinced her it was going to be fun and then proceeded to register her so now she's stuck ;)

Until then I have to catch up on running (tomorrow) and weight training (next week Tuesday) and, of course, swim a few more miles before the big event next week Sunday :)

How is your training going?

What's next on your race calendar?

Do you like open water swimming (or swimming in general)?

  1. One of these days I'd like to take a swim course and learn proper strokes. Right now I can only swim to play in a pool. Congrats on the certification! I could never be a nurse. I'm terrified of just visting the doctor! I'm glad there are others who can do the job without freaking out because I'd probably project my own fears onto patients!

  2. Thanks Jennifer! I was actually an Economics major in undergrad but decided to go into nursing because when I had my daughter my labor and delivery nurse was so amazing! Her name was Nancy and after her interaction with me I thought "If I can make other people feel how she made me feel then I will make a difference". I will never forget her.

  3. I am taking swim classes now. I am training for my 1st tri in September.

Isn't amazing how we get pulled in so many directions.

Good job working on deciding priorities.

    Yeah....certification!

    1. Thank you!!!! Good Luck on your first TRI! Which one are you doing? The cycling portion is the only thing that keeps me away from triathlons. The expense and bike maintenance etc. Plus, as clumsy as I am I'm pretty sure I would fall off. A lot.
