Wrapping up the Birthday week...

Pictures from the last five days (mostly)...

Today marks the end of my birthday week and the beginning of my "time to get it together and actually start training properly" week. So to kick off the new week I ran 8 miles with Dafney along Ft Lauderdale Beach...

Despite the noted improvement in my overall average pace I still felt like I was moving this fast...

This week I really need to improve my training  start training properly  start actually training. It's going to be a little tricky because I have to balance my desire to be consistent with the desire not to overdo it before my half marathon next week Sunday (part 1 of my Chicagoland half marathon series)...

And since it's a destination race, there has to be an adjustment to my typical running days to account for the days I travel etc. So I will probably run on Tuesday & Thursday and try to fit some non-impact cross training in on the other days...

Cross training (when I actually do it) has always helped me improve my running performance. There was a time when I was in the gym every day that I wasn't running (and sometimes even on those days). That hasn't happened recently, but that is the ultimate goal. Of course there isn't a "one size fits all" cross training plan. In the past, my plans have wavered between too much cardio and not enough strength training to overdoing the strength training and having to skip my running days. I'm still trying to get the right balance though. So I did some research and came across these Dos and Don'ts...

I thought these were really good tips so I'm going to try and keep them in mind when I do my cross training this week :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

What type of cross training do you do?

What races are you running this month?

Did/Do you have a birthday this month? Did you do anything to celebrate?

  1. Happy belated birthday!! Those are great strength training tips and are very to the point. I have not added any cross training into my routine except walking, but I really want to add strength training. There is a new gym opening here soon which has barre classes. I am signed up and ready to go!! But I am definitely going to have to figure out how to fit it into my routine as well as what other than barre I want to do.

    1. Thank you!!!! I would love to do a bare class! I've always wanted to but financially it doesn't make sense right now. My gym doesn't have any (yet) just the typical yoga classes, but they are never at times when I can go :(

  2. Happy belated birthday!!!

I do a months worth of celebration for my bday :) For my 40th, I did 4 major celebration ending with a week long girls trip to St. Martin!

When I was running more, I found cross training to always be pushed to the side and running took precedence. Big mistake....I stayed injury proned. I know now had I crossed trained and especially worked on my weak glutes and hamstrings, I would not have been so injury prone :( Lesson learned.....the hard way.

    Good luck with your training!

    1. I think a month of celebrations is the way to go!!!!!!! That's what I'm going to try next year ;)
I agree that proper cross training helps prevent injuries! I'm injury prone also which is even more motivation for me to keep up with my cross training and make it as much of a priority as running is :)
