The Struggle Is Real...but so is the Triumph ;)

Through a combination of a "congrats on finishing your marathon" gift card, a "take an extra $10 off" coupon, and an in-store discount at Dick's Sporting Goods, I was able to treat myself to an early Christmas gift...

There are a lot of great features the Vivoactive has that my Garmin Forerunner 220 doesn't (like the ability to track swimming and daily steps etc). The swimming feature was the biggest selling point for me because it's one of the forms of cross training that I tend to gravitate towards (albeit rarely) and I've never really been able to track my swimming sessions apart from mentally counting laps. On Sunday I did a very short swim to test out the watch (about 1/4 of a mile) and this morning I swam for 1/2 of a mile. I ended up stopping the swim session half way through in error but I completed the overall distance...

The pool was nice and quiet this morning...
I love it when I have the lane all to myself :)

My knee is still bothering me so I've been trying to take it easy. I haven't run at all this week (as I type this I realize it's only Tuesday) and will probably take the next few days off as well. I don't have a run scheduled until the 27th and I have a plyometric boot camp on the 26th (which is tentative depending on how my knee is feeling).

I'm doing the usual joint pampering I do when I'm fending off or dealing with an injury. I'm foam rolling, icing, wrapping, using topical stuff (IcyHot etc), but my TENS unit has been my number one pamper tool...

In an effort to ensure I was paying attention to everything that could be aggravating my knee pain I went to the running store to have them look at my shoes to see if it time to retire them (it isn't), and to see what else I should/could try to minimize the rapid wear on my shoes. I left with a a new pair of Hokas to add to the rotation (that were on sale at a great price!) and a knee strap to try. If it works they way it should I will be able to get through the rest of training and my race without a problem too much of a problem...

I'm still toying with the idea of dropping to the half marathon in Miami. I won't decide right now (I want to see how the next few weeks of training go) but I'm getting less and less excited about doing the race. I still have the Ft Lauderdale race on the books and I will decide what distance I do for that one based on how I feel after Miami.

Do you use a GPS running watch or app? Which one? What's your favorite feature?

What is the first race on your calendar for 2016?
