The Year of The Full: Chapter Six - What the Doctor Ordered...

Nowadays I try not to over think my aches and pains. That's not true... I totally over think them. But sometimes I wonder if I went from one extreme (assuming the pain is not a big deal when it actually is (which is how I was last year)) to the other (assuming every ache and pain is an issue when it isn't). I guess in the grand scheme of things it's better to assume the worst and find out nothing is wrong, than to assume nothing is wrong and end up not being able to run for a long period of time...

Last year I ignored my hamstring pain and I ended up with months of physical therapy and even more months of regret. Not to mention the cost of therapy, medication, the registration fees I lost etc...

So although sometimes I feel like I'm being paranoid, out of an abundance of caution I saw my orthopedic surgeon this afternoon. Dr. T is my favorite Ortho Surgeon (granted he is the only one I've been to as a patient) and he is also a runner so he understands my running psychosis dedication. He's never told me I shouldn't run (which I've always appreciated) and he doesn't over prescribe or over exaggerate.

So after a few x-rays...

A few mobility checks and an assessment of the areas I'm feeling pain, I got my official diagnosis:
Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis

Treatment:
No weight training on my legs (I can do other strength training stuff, just no weight machines etc)
Naproxen x 2 weeks
Follow up if no improvement after two weeks

Summary: I CAN RUN!!!!!!

Wednesday June 3rd is National Running Day so I'm going to wait until then to run. In the meantime I'm going to start the 30 day challenge for June...
(hopefully I can get through more than half the month this time)

After my appointment I rushed across town to spend the evening at Kai's Athletic Awards Banquet...
So proud of my baby girl!

Do you over think your aches and pains or do you ignore them?

Have you ever lost registration fees (or other race related investments) because of an injury?

Are you doing a 30 Day Challenge this month?

  1. I'm like you - I used to ignore pains, thinking I could get over them, but now ANY TINY TINGLE obvsiouly means I have a stress fracture.

  2. I try not to ignore anymore....or at least, I don't ignore any new pain. Also, I have been thinking about a 30 day ab challenge this month too!! You've just inspired me to commit to it. Even though I missed day 1...

  3. You SO have to be in tune to your body, to be able to distinguish discomfort you can push through versus true pain. So difficult to do! Glad you can keep running lady!

    1. Thank you!!!! I'm so relieved! Still going to take it easy though. Maybe ease off trying to run faster during my mid-week runs and just focus on the endurance goals for all my runs. I want to get to Chicago (and finish) injury free :)
