Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!!!
Half of my family is here for the 2016 Olympics and it has been quite a trip so far! It's hard to put all the emotions into words to be honest. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime vacations so I'm trying to take in all the experience has to offer. What I can say is trips like these require a lot of flexibility and a lot of patience (we are all learning that lesson). Today is going to be another busy day but here is a brief recap of the trip so far:Day one (-ish):
This was the start of a long day of travel, during which, Kai's phone was trauma alerted (thanks to TSA)...
Our flights took us from Ft Lauderdale to Campinas then on to Rio...
Kai was exhausted...
We met our hosts and got settled and then Gavin (brother-in-law), Kai and I took the "scenic" route to Copacabana beach for some of the beach volleyball games...
On the way one of the buses got a flat tire...
(you can't really tell from the picture but the loud hissing sound was enough confirmation for me)
It was hard to find out where to go because everyone had different instructions. We couldn't really find anyone that spoke English. And between the flat tire and a lot of confusing directions we ended up missing the game. The next "adventure" was our quest to find food that adhered to my dietary restrictions. Nothing that I could eat looked like my stomach could handle it (too greasy), but Gavin and Kai were able to find something small to eat. Eventually we headed home...
Day two:
My mom and I made breakfast for the family. We watched some of the Olympic heats on TV. Then did a little grocery shopping before we headed to the stadium. Three buses and a train later we were finally there, but along the way we saw where the athletes are staying...
We made our way inside and got settled (after dealing with several issues with the food and seats)...
While waiting for the Women's 100m semi finals and finals we got to see other running legends like Mo Farah...
So excited for my JA Team!!!
(gold and bronze in women's 100m final)
And it was an impressive run by Tori from Team USA as well...
It was another long journey back to the house. Then we finally had real food (after 1 am). I realize my self-imposed dietary restrictions will need to be lifted in order for me to not feel hungry 80% of the time. But as I said in the beginning, this trip has been about being flexible ;)
Today is Day Three and it's off to a (well needed) slow start. It should be an epic day of adventure and what I'm hoping will be history in the making later tonight at the men's 100m finals. I'm routing for my JA sprinters and really hoping Usain Bolt will bring home the gold for TeamJA!!!!
