The best thing about recovery week is that you usually don't feel too guilty about slacking off slowly returning to your training routine. Well, typically I don't because the week after a major race (aka Half Marathon) is pretty much a "slow" week for me. I think subconsciously I give myself permission to push the limits of the concept of rest, and somehow it often coincides with a busy work week (making it easier to justify transitioning from 1 rest day to 3...or 5)...
I felt myself slipping into that pattern this week (and it's only Wednesday) but I really didn't want to. The work week so far has been filled with very early and very busy days and so my mornings have precluded the possibility of cross training and my evenings have been spent grading assignments for the 2 classes I'm teaching. Today, however, despite a ton of work I have left to do, I needed to run for a bit...
I try not to have any pre-determined expectations for my first running debut post each half marathon, but I am hoping to PR at Miami Beach on March 1st, which gives me 31 days to prepare. A lot can happen in 31 days. And since I have a goal for Miami Beach I know that I can't waste too much time setting the foundation for this race. So today, undeterred by work stress (or maybe because of it) I ran non-stop or at least until I HAD to stop.
Screen shot of today's run from Garmin Connect...
(it's kind of blurry & the font is small, but I did 4 miles non-stop at a relatively decent min/mile pace)
This morning I pinned the Britto poster I got at the race expo to my office wall to add a splash of color...
(nothing like some wall art to brighten up your day)
It's only been a few days so I'm sure it's understandable that I still reminisce about the race on Sunday. I have no regrets, so I haven't been worried about my speed or pace or anything like that. Instead I just remember all the moments that made the event unique and special. So naturally I got caught up in the registration blitz and signed up for the 2016 FULL Miami Marathon. I'm looking forward to having another amazing event next year...
And hopefully I will be toeing the starting line a much better, stronger, more confident {dare I say "faster"?} runner.
I have exciting news to tell you tomorrow about something "new" that I get to do on Friday. I'm going to wait to share the news cause I have to put a few things in place before hand (so stay tuned!)
How has your running been going this week?
Is anyone else starting their 2016 race calendar with the Miami Half or Full Marathon?
:)
